What’s the Difference Between a
Coach, Mentor, and Teacher?
You’ve heard of all 3, so what’s the difference?

The terms teaching, mentoring, coaching, and counselling are often used mistakenly, but it is important to recognize that they are distinct activities with different objectives.
Teaching typically involves providing information and instruction in a structured setting such as a school or university. It often includes preparing materials, delivering lectures, assigning readings, and evaluating progress through tests and examinations. The goal of teaching is to impart knowledge and skills to students so they can apply what they have learned in their daily lives.
Mentoring is more personal than teaching because it involves two people developing a relationship that facilitates growth and development for the mentee (the person being mentored). A mentor offers advice from their own experience and provides support to help the mentee reach their goals. This type of learning usually takes place over a longer period of time than teaching.
Coaching is all about helping individuals reach their goals by focusing on the present and future rather than past events. It is more goal-oriented and action-based, with the coach assisting the individual in identifying areas of improvement and developing strategies to achieve their desired outcome.
Finally, counselling involves a professional providing advice and support to an individual who is going through a difficult period in their life or dealing with difficult emotions such as anxiety, depression, or grief. Counsellors help clients process these emotions so they can better understand them and make progress towards personal growth.

How did you get started coaching?
I always had an interest in self-help books and how the mind works and I did a life coaching course at night, just out of interest, not thinking of setting up my coaching business. Then I heard about the loneliness epidemic and thought this is ridiculous in this day and age with all the ways to connect! I felt for these people and wanted to help them and that is when I specialized in Dating coaching and set up the business.
What have been some of the best learning experiences so far as a coach?
That mindset is 90% of success. There is a difference in people’s lives that have confidence and those that do not. One of the best ways to be happy in life is to have a purpose and to serve others.
What's your most important skill you've learned for coaching?
To delve deeper, to listen and ask leading questions. Find out what the person's beliefs are because they are what changes your life and find out about their self identity. Your self identity is key to reaching your goals. To help them create and see the vision they want for their life and to support them as much as you can.
